The highlight text questions format allows teachers to have students highlight words, sentences, or paragraphs from a given text to answer questions.

Adding a Highlight Text Question

To first add a highlight text question, go to the Work/Questions page on an activity, mouse over insert content, and select Highlight Text.

Using Highlight Text Questions

Here, teachers will be given the content block for Highlight Text questions where they can enter the prompt and/or the content. After entering the prompt and/or content, teachers can select the Possible Responses tab to select the highlight type and then select all possible responses accordingly. Below is an example and a quick guide on how to create a highlight text question.

The process for creating a highlight text question should be done as followed:

  1. Teachers should first write the prompt and the content that students will be answering in the question forum.
  2. Teachers should then select the Possible Responses tab where teachers can then select all of the possible answers for the students (be sure to select whether the highlighted answers are paragraph, sentence, or word highlights)
  3. Teachers can then select the Correct Responses tab where teachers can then select all of the possible responses for the given prompt.
  4. Teachers can finally select whether the highlights that the students made will be worth All or nothing or Penalize wrong answers.
  5. From here, please be sure to click save otherwise the entire process will have to be redone.

Word Example

Here is an example of a prompt and content that students can highlight their text question.

On the Possible Responses tab, since this example is a word example, teachers should select Word and select any words that could be a possible answer. Teachers can also Clear Highlights (which will clear ALL highlights) or Highlight all possible (which will highlight all possible words).

After selecting all of the possible answers on the Possible Responses tab, teachers can then go to the Correct Responses tab to select all of the correct responses. Correct responses will be highlighted upon selecting them. Teachers can then select whether highlights will be worth All or nothing or they can deduct points by selecting Penalize wrong answers.

Sentence ExampleThis is an example of a sentence highlight question.

Here, all of the possible sentences in the content are enabled. Do not forget that teachers can use clear highlights to restart all selections or teachers can highlight all possible options and deselect from there.

Here is an example of the correct sentence selection.
