The Fill In The Blank question format allows students to finish sentences by filling in blanks either by typing their answers in or choosing from a list of words.

Creating a Fill In The Blank Question

  1. In the Work/Questions tab of an Assignment or Assessment click on Insert Content at the bottom of the page.

  2. From the list of available questions, go ahead and click on the Fill in the blank option.

  3. In the given text box located at the top, begin typing your statement/text for where you would like to add blanks.

  4. Adding Blanks - There are two ways to add new blanks:
    1. First, teachers can right-click anywhere inside the text box to pull up a pop-up window with additional text formatting options. Click on Add Blank to reveal a dropdown menu where teachers can select any of the four blank formats: Type-In, Dropdown, Numeric, and Math Formula.

    2. Alternatively, teachers can insert blanks using specific keybindings. These can be viewed by hovering the mouse over the small question mark icon labeled More tips here.
To quickly insert a type-in blank, type 3 underscores in a row: ___
      To insert a dropdown blank, type 2 underscores + "v": __v
      To insert a numeric blank, type 2 underscores + "n": __n
      To insert a math-formula blank, type 2 underscores + "m": __m
  5. Blank Formats- Here are the different ways blanks can be graded:
    • Type-In Format - Students will type their answers in the blank and be graded correctly if they match a rule type based on the rule type: Exact Match, Contain, Starts With, Ends With. Optionally answers can be case-sensitive.

    • Dropdown Format - Teachers can add dropdown options and then choose which one is the correct answer. There can be multiple correct answers as well.

    • Numeric Format - Add a range of what the correct answer can be. If you want a specific answer, make sure the minimum and maximum values are both the same. If you want any number, then you can leave the ranges blank.

    • Math Formula Format - Similar to the Type-in format, a mathematical keyboard will pop up to easily type in specific formulas. Here, you can add multiple acceptable answers and make answers case-sensitive.

  6. Assigning Points - Adding the point values for each individual blank will be added together to sum up at total at the bottom right corner of the content block.

  7. "All or Nothing" - If this feature is enabled then students that get any individual blank incorrect will receive no credit whatsoever. If the feature is then disabled, then if a student gets at least one blank wrong then they will still only receive credit for the blank that they get correct.

  8. Click the save or continue to add more questions. Teachers can also see a preview of the question created and make changes accordingly.
